In the words of specialists who reviewed this brilliant book for the Bulletin of the Royal College of Pathologists: “This is a remarkable book by a truly remarkable man.  … much in this book … from that part of the world where, regrettably, disease is still seen too often at a very advanced stage.  We have never seen it better illustrated or described.”  I might add that every photo was his – taken with the consummate skill of a professional photographer.  And his incredible collection is now the Cecil Cyrus Museum, which he and I hope will soon become a splendid ornament of the University of the West Indies.

But Dr. Cyrus is not “just a great surgeon”.  He is a gifted orator, speaking with inspiration on health and community issues, on radio, TV and across St. Vincent, especially to young people.  And he practises what he preaches.  He teaches health and exercise by example.  He introduced squash to St. Vincent 40 years ago by building the first squash court beneath his clinic, another at Belvedere, and the Cecil Cyrus Squash Complex in 1983, used for many other cultural events.  In fact St. Vincent has hosted 4 regional tournaments under his Presidency, with Vincentian regional champions.  And squash is but one of the Cyruses’ many gifts to the people of St. Vincent.

This incredible surgeon and sportsman is truly a Renaissance man, and he brings similar skills of love and a tender touch to his own exotic, tropical Garden.  Rumour has it that he talks to his plants every morning, and that when he has to cut or prune them, he first gives them an anaesthetic!  This humanity and humility is complemented by a wonderful wife, Kathryn, the love of his life, and four talented children – the O Tahiti apples of his eye!

I invite you to recognise Dr. Arthur Cecil Cyrus, the incredible surgeon of St. Vincent, with the Award of Distinction of the CHRC.
